Well I don't know about human living quarters, but we did try to build it as sound as we could afford to. The footings are 12" thick, with subflooring inside poured to hold the heaviest of semi trucks or tractors without cracking. Reinforced rebar, with tons of it, poured 24" thick.
See every thing we built of did on that farm was to last a life time. We didn't intend to ever have to re-do anything. From the barn, to the steel t-posts (8' posts drove 3 foot into solid rock, corner posts 10' tall, buried in solid concrete 3' into the ground). Even our water/electric lines running to all the pastures, paddocks, pens, and lots were buried 36" into the ground with over sized water lines for good steady pressure at the hydrants and the electric lines sent through piping to give extra protection if we ran over them with trucks/trailers or tractors, with individual shut off's to each one.
It just wasn't built for us to leave it, we planned to live there and retire there and spend the rest of our days there. I sure do miss it. There are plenty of things that if I had to do it over again, that I would do differently though.
